Kuala Lumpur, 23 September 2013 – The Eat, Sing & Travel People (EST) is proud to present, Georges Bizet’s opera, “Carmen” sung in French with English and Chinese surtitles on 29th, 31st October, 1st and 3rd November at Black Box, MAP @ Publika. Showtime is at 8:00PM except 3rd November at 3:00PM. The event is supported by MAP@Publika.

Carmen is an opéra in four acts with libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on the novel by Prosper Mérimée. First performance was on 3rd March 1875 at the Salle Favart by the Paris Opéra-Comique.

Set in Seville around the year 1830, the opera deals with the love and jealousy of Don José, who is lured away from his duty as a soldier and his beloved Micaëla by the gypsy factory-girl, Carmen. The opera will feature Soprano Ang Mei Foong as Carmen, Tenor Dr. Yap Jin Hin as Don José, Soprano Jane Soong and Jamie Sampana as Micaëla, Cipriano “Zip” De Guzman Jr. as Escamillo; the EST chorus and the Young Choral Academy children chorus.
Carmen, the most famous of Bizet’s operas, with its exotic Spanish setting, introduced a note of realism into opera. Orchestral suites have been derived from the score, while popular tunes include Carmen’s seductive Habanera and Séguidilla, the famous Toreador’s Song and Don José’s, La fleur que tu m’avais jetée (The flower that you threw me), with Micaëla’s moving aria Je dis que rien ne m’épouvante (I say that nothing frightens me).
Since it’s inception in April 2012, EST’s past productions include an abridged version of “La bohème” (November 2012), “A Merry Little Christmas in Publika” (December 2012), participation in the Publika Earth Hour (March 2013), Viva Verdi Bicentenary Celebration concert (April 2013) and “L’heure Exquise – an evening of French melodies” presenting Bass baritone, Chi Hoe Mak and Wong Chee Yean on piano (June 2013).
